Partnership & Support
We would like to take a moment to honor some of our prominent partners and supporters who were recognized at the Foundation's Purple and Gold Gala.
Volunteer of the Year, Bob Qualset
Bob Qualset graduated from Minnesota State Mankato with degrees in physics and math. His plan was to go to graduate school and become an engineer—but the draft board had different plans for him. After serving with the National Oceanic and Aeronautic Association, he returned to Minnesota and taught high school physics. But, because he could take classes on the GI Bill, he once again enrolled at Minnesota State Mankato. That led to a new career path, and a more than 30-year career as a certified public accountant.
When he retired, Bob wanted to do something meaningul with his time. Since 2010, he has volunteered as a physics tutor, spending 15 to 20 hours a week working with students at Minnesota State Manakto. "Time is more important than money," says Bob, who also funds scholarships with his wife, Marsha.
Minnesota State Mankato is pleased to honor Bob Qualset for so generously giving of his time and talents to help students succeed.
Philanthropic Partner of the Year, Wells Concrete
Wells Concrete is a longtime partner with the College of Science, Engineering and Technology. The company helped establish the civil engineering program at Minnesota State Mankato, along with two Mankato firms, I and S group and Bolton and Menk. Wells Concrete continues to support students in those programs with scholarships as well.
Founded in 1951, Wells Concrete today employs 850 people, with two million square feet of manufacturing space in Wells, Albany and Maple Grove, Minnesota and Grand Forks, North Dakota. The company provides high-quality structural and architectural pre-cast products to clients throughout the upper Midwest. Their projects have included the Minnesota Twins ballpark, Target Field, and the now one-billion-dollar stadium for the Minnesota Vikings. This past year Wells Concrete gave $100,000 and many other forms of support to the civil engineering and construction management programs at Minnesota State University, Mankato. For that generosity, the Minnesota State Mankato Foundation is happy to announce that Wells Concrete is its 2015 Corporate Philanthropic Partner of the year.
