It is a group of 18 students, 3 fellows and 15 scholars, who will work together throughout the semester engaging in academic and social events that will further your educational and career goals. As a participant you will also work in conjunction with faculty throughout the college and have the opportunity to get to know other Alliance participants at other institutions.
What types of activities are there for the program?
There will be a variety of on-campus and off-campus activities available for participants. You have the opportunity to go to fall events such as the Nobel Conference and the Kick-Off program at the Science Museum. The spring offers exposure to undergraduate research conferences and trips to industry sites. In addition there will be peer mentoring sessions, career workshop sessions, and academic activities here on campus. You will be able to get to know other students in similar areas of interest and network with professionals across campus.
There are many ways to benefit from the North Star STEM Alliance. You will be able to develop a larger social network both here at MSU and at other Alliance institutions. In addition you will have the chance to develop leadership skills and participate in activities that could strengthen your resumes. Opportunities will also be available to meet and learn from STEM professionals in industry. And there are financial rewards in the form of stipends if you complete the required hours of participation.
The time commitment varies depending on your desired level of commitment. North Star Scholars are committing to 30 hours of activities throughout the semester and if these hours are met you will receive a $300 stipend at the end of the term. The North Star Fellows will be expected to complete 70 hours of work for the term and the stipend will be $1,000.
You will need to fill out the North Star STEM application for either the Scholar or the Fellow depending on which option you feel best suites your interest and time commitment. The applications can be found at the following link or in the CSET Advising Center located in Trafton C125.
The deadline for application is December 11 and you turn in your application to Trafton C125.
