The Anne and John Frey Renewable Energy/ Bio Products Research Endowment provides support for a seminal experience in the life of an undergraduate student and faculty within the College of Science, Engineering and Technology at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The emphasis of the fellowship is to move renewable energy innovations through the technology transfer process and potentially commercialization. The significance of the award is to provide a student faculty team the time, space, and support to develop leaders through their contribution to the emerging field of renewable energy. In a small way, the intent of the fellowship is to promote Minnesota as a leader in renewable energy research that will provide economic strength, environmental quality, energy independence, and the creation of high quality jobs by moving innovations through a technology transfer toward commercialization.

The fellowship is awarded based on the quality and originality of the proposal and the ability for the goals of the proposal to be attained. Applications are received each fall through December 1st. The award decision is made in January. The majority of research takes place in the summer, with the results quantified in the fall and potential spring application at the Minnesota State University Undergraduate Research Symposium.

The total award of this research fellowship is $4,000 distributed as follows:

  • $500 - Faculty Advisor - reimbursed summer session 1
  • $500 - Supply budget - reimbursed as purchased
  • $3000 - Undergraduate student stipend with $2250 awarded in summer session I, and the remaining amount divided between the preceding spring, and following fall and spring terms.
