Transfer Advising

The advising office is also the first place of contact when transfer students have questions regarding credit transfer. Below are a few frequently asked questions for transfer students:

Transfer FAQ's

  1. How do you read your transfer audit?
  2. When do you need to have an evaluation done for your transfer courses?
  3. How does a waiver work?
  4. Why do I have trouble registerring for a class when I transferred in the pre-requisite?
  5. Why am unable to regsiter for 300-400 level classes?

How do you read your transfer audit?

  • Previously evaluated course equivalencies will be indicated on your transfer audit report.
    Example:
    CHEM 2013.00T AGeneral Chemistry I
    Normandale CC CHEM 1601
  • This means you have already satisfied the CHEM 201 course at MSU.
  • Some of your major and/or minor course requirements may have transferred to MSU, but equivalencies have not yet been determined.
    Example:
    BIOL TRF3.00TRF AGeneral Biology I
    U of GA BIOL 1601
  • Courses appearing like this on your DARS audit must be reviewed by the appropriate department chairperson for formal recognition.

When do you need to have an evaluation done for your transfer courses?

You do not have to have each of your TRF courses formally evaluated. Only those courses required for your major, major support courses, prerequisites, or minor courses need official evaluation. If you have any questions regarding this process, or which courses need evaluation, please contact the CSET Advising Center in Trafton C-125.

If you need to have your classes reviewed you should:

  • Plan to meet with the appropriate department chairperson to review your course description and/or course syllabus for an official substitution or equivalency determination. You will need to provide the detailed course description and a course syllabus from your previous institution for a departmental review at MSU.
  • Make certain you receive a copy of the substitution or equivalency form (from the Office of the Registrar) once your course has been formally approved for substitution or equivalency. Keep this form for your educational records!

How does a waiver work?

Waivers may be provided when you have satisfied course prerequisites or equivalencies through other educational or employment experiences which do not involve credits (example: you placed out of a course at your previous institution). PLEASE BE AWARE that WAIVERS DO NOT provide any college credits toward your degree or major. WAIVERS simply indicate that you have achieved the background necessary to continue in the next level of your major courses. You may need to take additional credits to meet requirements for your major.

Why do I have trouble registerring for a class when I transferred in the pre-requisite?

The registration system at MSU does not recognize transfer work. You will always have to have a manual override each semester. Here is what you do:

  • If the appropriate MSU equivalent prerequisite is already indicated on your transfer audit, you should be able to register for the next course level; however, we will need to know the specific course section you wish to take before we can “lift” the prerequisite hold.
  • If you believe that one (or more) of your transfer courses WILL satisfy prerequisite requirements but your transfer audit does not indicate equivalency (BIOL TRF or MATH TRF, for example), you will need to discuss this with the appropriate department chairperson.

The departmental representative may authorize your enrollment in a SPECIFIC SECTION of the course you need today if the determination is made that the prerequisite has been satisfied. (You may need to access an online course description or syllabus in the registration lab.) Please plan to follow up after registration today to make certain that the appropriate official substitution forms are submitted. (See instructions for transfer credit evaluation on the first page of this document.)

Why am unable to regsiter for 300-400 level classes?

For orientation, transfer students are provided with upper level course enrollment permission. This means that IF YOU HAVE SATISFIED THE PREREQUISITES, you should be able to register for open seats in 300 and 400 (upper) level classes in your major or minor.

Before your NEXT registration at MSU, you will need to apply for admission to your major in order to register for 300 and 400 level classes. Please plan to contact the College Advising Center (Trafton C-125) early this semester for major admission information.
