Current research, funded through the Minnesota DNR fisheries, investigates efficacy of marking northern pike fry otoliths with a chemical known as oxytetracycline. Initial mark detection and mark retention are both under investigation. Northern pike mark efficacy is useful for differentiating marked, stocked fish from naturally reproduced fish. The goal is to determine if oxytetracycline successfully marks northern pike. Gear used to capture age 0-1 northern pike from natural lakes is also under investigation. Various capture gears are subjected to two different temperatures in the fall season and in the spring season. Efficiently trapping age 0-1 northern pike provides valuable information regarding species success and can be used to make important management proposals. The goal is to determine the most effective capture gear for age 0-1 northern pike.
