A team of five graduate students, Zhuoning Li, Sho Kawakami, Shuk Ping Wong, William Tanberg, and Zhenhan Fang, from the Mathematics & Statistics Department, competed against two dozen other teams and won the Best Prediction at MinneMUDAC 2019. MinneMUDAC is a highly competitive data analytics tournament where students are given a complex data problem to solve under a tight time constraint. With guidance from department faculty members Dr. Iresha Premarathna and Dr. Sanjel Deepak, the team built a Time Series Regression model and GARCH model to predict soybean stock prices in order to provide market insights to local farmers.
