Ben completed his M.S. in marine sciences in 2011, where he studied denitrification in tidal freshwater rivers. He worked as a chemist with the Department of Natural Resources until joining the WRC in 2014. Ben is excited to contribute to monitoring and research to assist in understanding water quality issues in the Minnesota River Basin. The Water Resources Center carries out monitoring for nutrients and sediments as part of the Watershed Pollutant Load Monitoring Network. This data is invaluable to developing a long term record of water quality and pollutant loads in Minnesota, and for comparing regional differences in water quality throughout the state. Other projects include monitoring fecal coliform and nutrients in the Watonwan River as part of the Surface Watershed Assessment Grant program, and assisting with sample collection for sediment fingerprinting research.
