Bacteria and Disease Research Stream
The focus of this Bacteria and Disease Research Stream is to identify the virulence (disease causing) factors of Flavobacterium psychrophilum, which is the causative agent of bacterial cold-water disease (BCWD) in salmonid fishes including rainbow trout. Scholars in this stream use genetic manipulation techniques to delete the potential virulence factor-encoding genes.
Flavobacterium psychrophilum is a motile bacteria. This image shows the gliding motility of the bacteria on a glass surface. The rainbow traces indicate the cells moved from a location colored in red to blue within a period of time.
