Radichel Herbarium Collections

Students who make plant collections as part of their botanical studies at Minnesota State University, Mankato are the mainstay of the Radichel Herbarium. As we continue to inventory and database the contents of the Herbarium, we discover more of these collections. Masters theses listed below may be found in Floristic Surveys.

Floristic Surveys

"Vegetation" refers to the kinds of plants growing within a particular area. Coniferous forest, dominated by pine and spruce trees, is one vegetation type that occurs in northern Minnesota. Prairie, dominated by grasses, is another vegetation type that occurs in western Minnesota. "Flora" refers to the actual plant species growing within a particular area. Floristic surveys are carried out by walking through an area many times during one or more growing seasons to identify plants and collect specimens.

Students at Minnesota State University-Mankato have been performing floristic surveys as part of their graduate work for 40 years. Theses and reports are available to the public in the Minnesota State University library's Lass Center for Minnesota Studies.

The Radichel Herbarium houses special collections and/or voucher specimens for most of these surveys.
