Internships

There is no official internship requirement for the civil engineering program, however students are encouraged to enhance their education during summers and other times with positions at local firms or agencies. Some students take a summer and a semester for a long-term full-time internship, with a greater possibility of being hired full-time with the same company after graduation.

The Jackson County Public Works Department has several openings for full-time seasonal summer interns, including Civil Engineering technicians, GIS, and maintenance.

Washington County, MN

The Washington County Public Works Department has openings for full-time seasonal summer interns. The position will report to the Construction Manager or Assistant County Surveyor. This position assists engineers, construction inspectors, and survey crews on roadway construction and/or survey projects. Under direct supervision, the engineering intern will inspect and monitor the progress of the project to ensure contractors meet county and state specifications. The position will document progress, materials, test results, and other required reports/logs. Participates in survey fieldwork necessary to maintain construction progress and/or for maintenance and perpetuation of the United States Public Land Survey System. Work will be approximately 85% outside/15% inside. Inside work will include assisting in the general duties of the design/engineering department.

Cemstone - Mankato and Faribault

We have a summer position available in Mankato & possibly Faribault for a person to learn and work with concrete on the QC side. This job would consist of conducting aggregate moistures, aggregate gradations, MN-Dot workbook entries, and job site visits with QC work.

Winona County, MN

Seasonal Engineering Aide will perform inspection and testing duties on the County's highway construction projects along with inspection and inventory of the department's transportation inventory. Seasonal Engineering Aide reports to the full-time County Engineering Technicians and Assistant County Engineer.

Carver County, MN

Up to three positions assisting Public Works staff with different aspects of field and office operations related to asset management, highway construction, and other functions of Public Works. The position may be assigned to a single project or multiple projects over the course of employment and will be directed and supervised by either the Engineering or Surveying & Mapping departments of Public Works.
